目前中小学校大力推广普通话，一些地方方言反被晾在了一边。近年来，关于粤语存废与保护的争论一直不断。珠海博爱幼儿园园长陈守红说，她2009年到四川的北川考察，发现当地羌族孩子对本民族语言只会说一点点了，并且绝大部分小孩已不会书写。这种现象让她联想到粤语，让她联想到岭南文化的逐渐流失。
